Module 5 readings

Introduction

The multi-faceted nature of disaster preparedness and planning includes a number vital activities that must be accomplished by emergency managers and others. This may include establishing a preparedness council, creating a preparedness council, passing laws and ordinances, planning, training, conducting exercises, etc. The required reading shares a nice overview of the key duties emergency managers fulfill before disasters occur.

The recommended reading covers grant management, which has become an increasingly significant responsibility of emergency managers due to rising disasters and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, and other federal entities allocate funds through grant programs to local and state governments to enhance disaster preparedness and resilience. Thus, the recommended reading identifies how grants can be acquired and managed.
