AI Tools for Art

One of the most exciting uses of recently developed AI tools is their application in art generation. Especially for people not skilled at creating art, AI can be used to generate concept art, backgrounds, or other images to help add visual flair to assignments and presentations. There are several free and low-cost tools available for usage today. While most AI-generated images contain subtle signs of their artificial origin, their results can be indistinguishable to untrained eyes.

Realistic image of Pope Francis wearing a long, puffy, white coat. Image was created by AI

AI Art's Impact on the World

Pope Francis, but make it fashion. A person playing around with Midjourney, the AI art program, went viral for creating an image of the pope wearing a coat that could have been pulled off a Balenciaga runway. The image went viral, not because it was so unrealistically absurd, but because it was believable. The pope does have drip, but just not exactly like this.

Because AI art tools can create such realistic images, it's very important to use these tools ethically and to make it clear to audiences that AI was used.

Pros and Cons of AI-generated Art

The Tech Advocate explains that while AI art can create stunning and captivating visuals, there are ethical pros and cons to consider. AI art generation is the practice of using algorithms to generate unique pieces of art. This technology is rapidly advancing and becoming more accessible to everyday users.

Pros:

  1. Accessibility. AI art generation makes art creation easier and more accessible to everyone. Even people with no artistic abilities can use AI art to create visually appealing pieces.
  2. Efficiency. AI art generation can create large amounts of art within a short period. This can save time and resources that would have been used in traditional manual art creation.
  3. Innovation. AI art generation can help artists innovate by providing new tools and techniques for artistic expression. This can lead to the creation of unique pieces that were not possible before.

Cons:

  1. Inequality. The accessibility of AI art generation may lead to the creation of a new elite class of artists who have access to the latest and most advanced AI art tools. This could widen the gap between traditional artists and those who prefer to use AI.
  2. Plagiarism. AI art generation can create pieces that look similar to existing works of art, raising questions of authenticity and plagiarism. As AI algorithms continue to learn from existing art, it may become more challenging to distinguish between original and AI-generated art.
  3. Ethics: There are ethical concerns surrounding the use of AI art generation, particularly around ownership and authenticity. Who owns the rights to AI-generated art, and how can we verify the authenticity of the pieces?

AI Image Detection

All AI detection tools perform imperfectly and may make mistakes. It can often be a good idea to test a suspicious image on multiple platforms, to see if there is consensus. Even this can sometimes be misleading. It is important to bring in context and other evidence when making such judgements.
