NURS 4340: Genomics in Nursing and Health

Finding Articles

Before you start searching for articles, think of your specific research question and the main ideas you plan to write about. This will help you identify search terms to use in the databases and make your search process more efficient.

If you search for "genomics" in a database, you'll find hundreds of thousands of articles on a wide variety of topics. To focus on your unique research needs, use additional search terms relevant to your interests. Think about...

  • Do I want to learn more about a specific genetic disorder, such as Huntington's disease?
  • Do I want to learn more about the effectiveness of specific interventions or treatments?
  • What are the legal, ethical, or social issues surrounding this disorder?
  • Do I want to focus on how a disorder affects a specific demographic, like an age group?
  • Are there synonyms or related words I can use for my search terms? (For example: Huntington's or "Huntington's disease").

It might help to start with some background research to learn more about the disorder, the risk factors, how it is diagnosed, the interventions and treatments, etc. Once you've identified the main ideas you plan to research, combine your search terms using AND to create a search string you can use in a database. For example: Huntington's AND treatment AND children

Databases for Scholarly Sources

Use the following databases to find articles about genomics and nursing. While these databases primarily include scholarly, peer-reviewed articles, they may also include other types of sources such as patient education materials, book reviews, and magazine articles. Use the database filters to filter your results to the type of sources you need.

Journals & Trade Magazines

The following are recommended nursing and genomics journals. Most of these journals are scholarly. This means that some of the articles in these journals were written by experts and were reviewed by several other experts in the field before publication. This ensures the articles' quality. Be aware, however, that peer-reviewed journals also include book reviews, editorials, letters to the editor, and other news items that are not peer-reviewed.

Once you click on a link, you'll arrive at the landing page for the publication. Click on one of the links under Full Text Access to begin browsing the content.

Interlibrary Loan for Articles

If you can't access the full text of an article using any of the resources on this page, use Interlibrary Loan to request the article. We'll locate another library that has the article and get you a PDF copy for free; this typically takes 2-3 business days. UVU students and employees should never pay for articles—the library has you covered!
