How to search for resources

Search Strategies

If you need to find a resource and aren't sure how, here are some simple steps you can take.

Fulton library uses a tool called OneSearch to browse its collection. Some items that OneSearch might find are held at other libraries but can be brought to UVU students when they fill out an interlibrary loan request.

Before using OneSearch, please be aware that it doesn't work like Google. When you use OneSearch, you only need to enter the most relevant terms of the search you'd like to conduct. For example, if you're looking for information about the manufacturing of steel, you only need to enter: steel AND manufacturing. The word 'AND' tells OneSearch that you're looking for more than one thing. In this case, you're not just looking for information about steel, but how it is manufactured as well. 'AND' tells OneSearch to return results that relate to both those keywords.

One way you could make a search more precise is by using quotation marks. Quotation marks can be put around words or phrases that should be kept together. For example, if you want to find out how to calculate tensile strength, you would put the words "tensile strength" in quotation marks to tell OneSearch that you are looking only for results about that entire concept. If we do not use quotation marks, OneSearch may return results containing the word 'tensile' or the word 'strength' that don't answer our question about calculating tensile strength.

If you're having trouble conducting a search, please contact your subject librarian. She would be happy to help you! Otherwise, best of luck in your research!
