Guide to Research Methodologies

This page is short summary of the two main research methodologies in education. For more in-depth definitions, see the Research Methodologies guide linked below.

Research Methodology in Education

The scientific method is the basis for educational research. Using this method, researchers propose a hypothesis, gather data, and come to a conclusion about the hypothesis based on that data. Often, this results in the proposition of new hypotheses and further research.

The two main types of data collection are qualitative research and quantitative research.

Qualitative Research

Qualitative research involves gathering data that is generally non-numerical. Qualitative data is descriptive, usually based on interviews or observations. Types of qualitative research include:

  • Case studies
  • Personal experiences and life stories
  • Interviews and observations
  • Cultural texts
  • Ethnographic studies
  • Descriptive research
  • Historical research
  • ...and more!

Quantitative Research

Quantitative research involves gathering numerical data and interpreting statistics for relationships between variables. Types of quantitative research include:

  • Statistical analysis
  • Sampling
  • Correlational research
  • Meta-analyses
  • Descriptive survey research
  • Experimental research
  • Single - subject research
  • Causal - comparative research
  • ...and more!
