Russian Art and Architecture

Architecture at the End of the Earth (Print Book) by William Craft Brumfield

Carpeted in boreal forests, dotted with lakes, cut by rivers, and straddling the Arctic Circle, the region surrounding the White Sea, which is known as the Russian North, is sparsely populated and immensely isolated. It is also the home to architectural marvels, as many of the original wooden and brick churches and homes in the region's ancient villages and towns still stand. Featuring nearly two hundred full color photographs of these beautiful centuries-old structures, Architecture at the End of the Earth is the most recent addition to William Craft Brumfield's ongoing project to photographically document all aspects of Russian architecture.

The most comprehensive study of this subject to date, A History of Russian Architecture surveys Russian building from the masonry churches of tenth-century Kievan Rus to the pre-fabricated built environments of the present. Subject to cultural and stylistic influences from both East and West, Russian architecture nonetheless developed its own distinctive approaches to building, as demonstrated in the four parts of the study: early medieval Rus up to the Mongol invasion in the mid-twelfth century; the revival of architecture in Novgorod and Muscovy from the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries; the cultural revolution in architecture in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries; and the advent of modern architecture.

Russian Painting (Ebook) by Peter Leek

In this book, we come to understand the author's viewpoint on Russian culture as a combination of western culture as well as eastern. These influences are demonstrated in the works and cover a vast pictorial scope. Artists such as Borovikovsky, Serov, Vrubel, Briullov, Fedotov, Repin, Shishkin and Levitan, among many others, bring their own fundamental contribution to the history of art. Peter Leek puts the evolution of the history of Russian art after the fall of communism into perspective.

Museum of Russian Art
The Museum of Russian Art (TMORA) promotes understanding of the art, people, and culture of Muscovite Russia, the Russian Empire, and the former republics of the Soviet Union through outstanding exhibitions, cultural presentations, and educational programs serving the people of Minnesota and the nation.
State Hermitage Museum
Originally founded by Catherine the Great in 1764, the State Hermitage Museum is one of the largest museums in the world. It contains thousands of works of art and historic artifacts.
State Russian Museum
The State Russian Museum is the world’s largest collection of Russian art, housed in a unique architectural complex in the historical centre of St Petersburg...It was the first museum of Russian art, initiated by Emperor Alexander III...The museum collection contains over 400,000 exhibits covering all major periods and trends in the history of Russian art, all main types and genres, trends, and schools of Russian art over more than a thousand years: from the tenth to the twenty-first century.
