Library Instruction for English Research

Importing Modules from Canvas Commons

You will need to repeat these steps for each module (Topic Development, Search Tools, and Evaluating Sources) you'd like to include in your course. If you are teaching multiple courses with multiple Canvas instances, you will need to repeat the steps for each course, as well.

  1. Log in to Canvas.
  2. Click the Commons button on your sidebar to login to Canvas Commons (see image, right).
  3. Click on the Canvas module link you want to use.
  4. Follow the instructions from the document below.

Topic Development

Topic Development

This module will help students select a researchable topic for their Project Proposals (and the scaffolded assignments which lead up to that project). Students will also begin to think about the larger issues behind their project ideas and select search terms that can help them research their topics. 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, students will be able to:

  • Develop a topic that meets your assignment criteria and has proper scope.
  • Select effective search terms for your topic.
  • Identify how and where to get help when you have questions about the research process and/or using the library.

Search Tools & Databases

Search Tools & Databases: 30-minute session

This module will teach students how to use various search tools to find information sources for their research. Students will also learn to identify source types and learn more about using search terms in the library databases.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, students will be able to:

  • Select an appropriate search tool to fill an information need. 
  • Navigate Fulton Library’s databases by: 
    • Formatting searches 
    • Using filters 
    • Accessing the full text of articles 
    • Finding citations 
    • Saving articles for later using the “share”/article link. 
  • Identify how and where to get help when they have questions about the research process and/or using library resources.

Source Evaluation

Source Evaluation: 20-minute session

This module will teach students how to identify and evaluate different source types for use in their research. Students will learn to distinguish between source types, fact-check their chosen sources, and recognize their own authority in scholarly conversations. 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the session, students will be able to:

  • Distinguish between popular and scholarly sources.  
  • Model source evaluations within the context of a research need using the SIFT method.  
  • Identify how and where to get help when you have questions about the research process and/or using library resources.
